The Scars Are Not Only on My Body but in My Mind

The scars cancer left behind are not only ones that are on the surface but go much deeper. The scars that cancer left can’t always be seen. Yes, you can look at my body and see on my chest and neck where a port once was placed. You can look even closer at my body and see black dots on my hips and stomach where they placed tattoos to line me up for my radiation. But the scars you don’t see are the scars that haunt me. The scars of fear and trauma and how cancer leaves you a shell of who you once were. Those are the scars that run deep.

I will also say that the scars that cancer leaves are not only on the patient but on our loved ones and the ones who take care of us along the way as we fight this battle. It damages not only us physically and mentally, but it also causes scars on relationships. Things we say that we don’t mean because we feel miss understood. Things we say out of anger. All of these leave scars on those around us. Cancer does so much destruction to the person going through cancer and those around us, we just need to be strong enough to keep pushing through the scars and not let them overcome us.
