Asking for and offering support after a cancer diagnosis should not be complicated, but it is. What is it about cancer that suddenly makes communication amongst friends so difficult? Good communication is a two-way street and is key to every aspect of the cancer experience, the quality of our connections, and ultimately our experience as survivor or supporter. Without clear communication, problems can arise, expectations can go unmet, feelings can get hurt, and the mental health of all involved can suffer as anxiety, fear, withdrawal, and isolation mount. Young adults often lack the experience and tools that help them navigate these challenging situations. Whether the communication is spoken or unspoken, our ability to be honest and open can be messy. This 90-minute webinar will provide the audience a general overview of communication challenges and offer practical tips and techniques to navigate the interactions so that Adolescents and Young Adults (AYAs) stay connected, and support is meaningful, and consistent with patient needs.
