Dear Cancer,

It is with a mixture of relief, gratitude, and determination that I address you today. You, who once infiltrated my life with fear and uncertainty, have now become a symbol of resilience, hope, and the power of human spirit.

As I reflect on my journey through the complexities of treatment and recovery, I am filled with a sense of awe at the strength that emerged from within me. Your presence, though daunting, ignited a fire within my soul—a burning desire to not only overcome my own challenges but to also make a difference in the lives of others. Through a community of unwavering support, relentless determination, and boundless optimism, I transcended the confines of disease and transformed my pain into purpose.

A year after being declared in remission, I embarked on a new chapter of my life in Washington, DC, driven by a singular mission to enact change. My story, like that of countless others who have faced similar trials, is not just about surviving cancer; it is a testament to the tenacity of the human spirit and the extraordinary impact that individuals can have on the world.

Survivorship, I have come to understand, is a multifaceted journey—one that extends far beyond the realm of diagnosis and treatment. It is a process marked by both triumphs and tribulations, by moments of profound joy, and lingering instability. The transition from patient to survivor is not without its challenges, as we navigate the physical, emotional, and financial aftermath of cancer.

The day I was informed by my oncologist and surgeon that I had completed active treatment was a momentous occasion, yet it also left me grappling with a sense of apprehension. The sudden cessation of frequent medical appointments and check-ups felt disorienting, as if I had been cast adrift without a compass. Despite my overwhelming gratitude for achieving remission, I found myself hesitant to fully embrace this new chapter of my life.

The complexities of survivorship soon became apparent as I navigated the nuances of post-treatment life. The fear of recurrence loomed large, sometimes casting a shadow over even the most mundane aspects of daily activities and the loss of a dear friend and fellow advocate became a sharp reminder of the fragility of life.

Yet amidst the darkness, I discovered a well of stamina and a newfound appreciation for the gift of life. Survivorship, I realized, is not merely about surviving cancer; it is about embracing life with renewed vigor and purpose. It is about finding beauty in the midst of adversity, and strength in the face of uncertainty.

My journey through survivorship has been marked by moments of profound growth and personal transformation. It has forced me to confront my own mortality, to reevaluate my priorities, and to cherish the precious moments of joy and connection that life has to offer.

As I stand here today, a proud survivor and advocate for change, I am reminded of the power of perseverance and the importance of community. Through our shared experiences, we have the opportunity to inspire hope, to enact change, and to support one another on this journey called life.

So, dear Cancer, though you may have once cast a shadow over my life, you have also been the catalyst for profound transformation and growth. You have taught me the value of strength, the power of advocacy, and the importance of embracing life with open arms.

As I continue on this journey of advocacy, I do so with a heart filled with gratitude and a determination to make a difference in the lives of others. Together, we can navigate the complexities of cancer with courage, strength, and encouragement.

With resilience and hope,

Andrea
