Facilitated by Bright Spot Network’s Director of Programs and Community Outreach, Carissa Hodgson, LCSW OSW-C
For a parent with cancer, the fear of not being able to connect or create special moments with your children can be overwhelming. How do you bond and make special moments while navigating treatment induced fatigue or nausea, cognitive or vision challenges, or changes to mobility? How do you connect when you are simply too tired or overwhelmed? This virtual workshop will hold those questions front and center, providing a connective environment that centers the experience of parents with cancer who are looking to connect with their children.
This workshop will provide both practical guidance on how parents can stay connected to their children, even during the stress of a diagnosis and cancer treatment’s side-effects. Parents will have an opportunity to share amongst themselves both their struggles as parents with cancer as well as some of those moments that stand out as magical.
This workshop will be broken into three parts. The first 30 minutes will be a presentation about creative ways you can engage with kids during cancer treatment. The second 30 minutes will be a facilitated discussion among parents to share your experiences and ideas with one other. The final 30 minutes will be open art time to begin working on the projects sent to you. Kids are invited to attend this last half hour of the workshop.
Parents will receive a copy of Horizontal Parenting by Dasha Tolstikova and Michelle Woo, as well as materials to complete three different art activities that will facilitate meaningful connections between them and their children: Family Shield, Touchstones & Family Sculpture.
Registration will be limited to 25 participants–please double-check your calendars to make sure this date and time will work for you. We want to ensure as many parents as possible can benefit from the live interaction of the workshop environment.
