Survivor, Hodgkin’s Lymphoma

Hailey Johnston is a Hodgkin’s Lymphoma survivor and activist with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science. She currently works as an advocate for domestic and sexual violence survivors, and she is the founder of Escape: LGBTQIA+ adolescent and young adult cancer support. Once a vaccine is released, and COVID-19 restrictions are lifted, she plans to pursue doctoral studies in Public Health and Policy. Hailey is passionate about serving the LGBTQIA+ community and creating equity in healthcare services.

As I write this letter, I’m imagining you standing in front of your mirror at 16 years old, only a few months past finishing chemo and radiation. It’s around 2:00 p.m., you’re contorting your body in a way that makes you appear as thin as possible for a selfie, and all you’ve had to eat today is a bowl of plain oatmeal with blueberries because you are terrified of any food that isn’t considered “clean.”
